Introduction
Self-Lubricating Bearing Solutions
Introduction
Friction is a primary source of energy loss and wear in mechanical systems. Self-lubricating bearings, also referred to as oilless bushings or sliding bearings, are designed to provide stable sliding performance without continuous external lubrication. They are widely used in applications where conventional grease or oil lubrication is impractical, unreliable, or prohibited by operating conditions.
How Self-Lubricating Bushings Work
Unlike rolling-element bearings, oilless bushings operate through sliding motion and provide lubrication from the bearing material itself. Common technical approaches include:
Embedded solid lubricants: Graphite, MoS₂, or PTFE is embedded in a metallic matrix, typically bronze. During operation, a small amount of solid lubricant transfers to the mating surface, forming a low-friction film.
Porous metal structures: Sintered bronze or iron bushings contain microscopic pores that are vacuum-impregnated with oil. Heat generated during operation causes the oil to expand and reach the bearing surface; when operation stops and cooling occurs, capillary action draws the oil back into the pores.
Layered composite structures: A strong backing, an intermediate sintered bronze layer, and a low-friction PTFE-based sliding layer are combined to achieve low friction and good wear resistance.

Advantages of Self-Lubricating Bearings
Lower manufacturing costs: No oil supply systems, lubrication holes, or oil grooves are required, reducing machining and production expense.
Reduced operating and maintenance costs: Lubricant consumption is minimized, routine maintenance is reduced, and the risk of insufficient lubrication is lowered.
Simplified design and shorter development cycles: Oil-free operation allows more compact mechanical structures and can shorten design time.
Improved equipment performance and durability: Consistent friction behavior and longer service life support reliable operation.
Environmental and sustainability benefits: No waste oil collection or disposal is required, supporting cleaner industrial operations.
Typical Applications
Self-lubricating bearings are suitable for:
Harsh and maintenance-constrained environments
Applications requiring long service intervals with built-in lubrication
High-load, low-speed rotational, oscillating, and linear reciprocating motion
Applications where traditional lubricants are restricted or cannot be used for technical, safety, or regulatory reasons
Extreme conditions including dust, impact loads, or radiation exposure
Steel, metallurgy and process industries: steel mill equipment, continuous casting, rolling mills, furnace and high-temperature systems
Product Range
The self-lubricating bearing portfolio includes:
Graphite Plugged Bronze Bearings (JDB Series): Suitable for high-load, low-speed, intermittent motion, and high-temperature applications. Graphite plugs provide continuous solid lubrication. Common in heavy machinery, molds, and hydraulic components.
PTFE-Based Composite Bushings (SF Series): Metal-backed bushings with a PTFE-based lining. Low friction, good wear resistance, suitable for dry running or marginal lubrication. Common in automotive, office equipment, and hydraulics.
Bimetal Bushings (JF Series): Steel backing combined with a sintered bronze or lead-bronze lining. Good load capacity and fatigue strength; often used with grease or oil but can operate under marginal lubrication. Found in engines, chassis parts, and agricultural machinery.
Wrapped Bronze Bearings (FB Series): Bronze strip with lubrication pockets or through-holes. A cost-effective solution for medium loads and speeds, usually with initial greasing and extended relubrication intervals.
These products can be engineered for high loads, oscillating motion, intermittent operation, limited maintenance access, contamination, elevated temperatures, or restricted lubrication conditions.
Application-Oriented Bearing Selection
Bearing selection is based on the application rather than dimensions alone. Relevant factors include material selection, load, speed, PV value, temperature, shaft condition, lubrication conditions, environment, and expected service life.
Compared with conventional lubricated bearing arrangements, self-lubricating bearing solutions can help address:
Reduced lubrication requirements
Lower routine maintenance demand
Long-term sliding performance
Oscillating and intermittent motion
Difficult-to-access bearing locations
High-load applications
Corrosive or contaminated environments
Elevated-temperature applications
Compact mechanical designs
Reduced risk associated with inadequate lubrication

Self-Lubricating Bearings in Construction & Heavy Equipment Engineering
Self-lubricating bearings are critical components in modern construction machinery, where high loads, abrasive dust, shock impact, and limited maintenance access define daily operation. In these environments, traditional grease lubrication often fails due to contamination, washout, or insufficient servicing intervals.
Engineered composite bushings, solid bronze bearings, and PTFE-lined sliding bearings provide maintenance-free performance, high load capacity, and long service life in demanding field conditions.
Major Construction Machinery Applications
1. Excavator
Typical installation points:
Hydraulic cylinder buffer bushings
Boom and arm pivot bushings
Body articulation bushings
Undercarriage (track system) bushings
Engineering value:
Excavators operate under oscillating loads and frequent reversing motion. Self-lubricating bearings reduce stick-slip, handle high edge loading, and maintain performance in muddy or dusty environments.
2. Bulldozer
Typical installation points:
Track system bushings (undercarriage components)
Blade linkage bushings
Frame joint bushings
Engineering value:
High-impact loads and continuous abrasive contact demand bushings with superior wear resistance and compressive strength.
3. Rotary Drilling Rig
Typical installation points:
Mast articulation joints
Hydraulic cylinder connections
Structural pivot bushings
Engineering value:
Drilling rigs operate under heavy static loads and vibration. Solid bronze or composite self-lubricating bushings prevent seizure during long-duration, low-speed rotation.
4. Concrete Pump Truck
Typical installation points:
Boom arm joints
Triangular support bracket bushings
Hinge articulation bushings
Engineering value:
Continuous oscillation and high-altitude operation require stable friction performance without lubrication leakage risk.
5. Shield Tunnel Boring Machine
Typical installation points:
Structural joint bushings
Support system sliding bearings
Rear pulley bushings
Engineering value:
Underground environments introduce high humidity, slurry contamination, and difficult maintenance access. Self-lubricating bearings ensure operational reliability without frequent service shutdowns.
Additional Equipment Coverage
Self-lubricating bushings are also widely used in:
Road Construction Machinery – roller pivots, linkage systems
Rock Grabber – hinge bushings and support joints
Reclaimer Conveyor – articulation bushings and sliding supports
Key Installation Positions in Heavy Machinery
Across equipment categories, common mounting locations include:
Hydraulic cylinder buffer bronze bushings
Structural joint bushings
Undercarriage “four wheels and one track” bushings
Boom arm bronze bushings
Triangular bracket joint bushings
Rear pulley bronze bushings
Lifting lug (ear plate) bushings
Performance Characteristics in Engineering Applications
Self-lubricating bearings used in heavy machinery are selected based on:
High load capacity (static and dynamic)
Exceptional wear resistance
Dimensional stability under shock loads
Dust and debris resistance
Extended maintenance intervals or fully maintenance-free operation
Reduced downtime in remote or high-altitude sites
Why Self-Lubricating Bearings Improve Total Equipment Value
From a lifecycle cost perspective, eliminating centralized lubrication systems reduces:
Design complexity
Lubrication system weight
Grease consumption
Field maintenance labor
Environmental contamination risks
In construction and mining machinery, uptime equals profitability. Self-lubricating sliding bearings deliver predictable friction behavior, longer replacement intervals, and enhanced reliability under extreme duty cycles.
